Example 1.

Let a =b = 1

then a² = a x b

now subtract b² from both sides

a²-b²=a x b -b²

Factorize and rearrange

(a + b) x (a – b) = (a – b) x b  Now Cross out (a-b) from each side of the equation

we get (a + b) = b  

 substitute Eq.1 with the result of 2 equaling 1 

2  =  1

Example 2.

A magician has to cross a river 100 feet wide, with the water flowing 20 feet per second. His cargo is a tiger, a goat which the tiger will kill in the absence of the owner, and a sack of carrots that the goat will eat if it is not watched. He can carry only one of those items across the river at a time in his small boat.

(a) How can he transport his three belongings safely to the dock?

(b) What speed should he be heading straight across the river in order to make it to the dock which is 50 feet down stream?
