1. Origins
This section traces the origin of Mathurs as they split from Brahmins, the elite group that set themselves at the top of the other three casts as in charge of the prevailing religious aspects of the people’s lives.
Born in the start of 1925, in New Delhi, I had many adventures or memorable situations .I somehow have photographic memories (in color) of my childhood’ As a child grew in a dusty, one road town of Gurgaon (now almost a metropolitan competing with the capital city, New Delhi) .Kidnapped, tied down to a tree by a gardener for picking mangoes, freed with a quarter of a Rupee, one hundredth of a dollar as ransom , crazy about kite making and flying and cricket game, in dirty streets .
Remember most pleasant time, spending quality times with mother and father. With mother in winter time lying on roof tops just sunning, chatting and listening to her stories We were often pestered by the monkeys (stealing my fruits and one time my shoes ). In school, I was always dealing with gang of Muslim kids, beaten but subsequently fighting back using Judo tricks my grandfather taught. I was impressed by his Judo tricks, as on one occasion, he took my side, by flipping a burly man, twice his size, flat on his back).
Mathurs, religously more liberal, moved to other more challenging professions including literature, education, law, medicine and administrators. Initially this may be due to theological reasons but later mostly for security. They gravitated toward the established administration services of the prevailing rolers. Because of their broader background and liberal philosophy, Mathurs were able to secure often high positions in the courts of changing rulers, the Hindu Kings (to year 1,192), then Mogals (to 1525), British Rule (to 1947), and now independent Indian Government. Many were able to secure high positions in the royal courts, secretariats quickly adapting to changing conditions.
This tradition still persists in current India, as well as in USA and other Western Societies of the adopted countries. AS a result, most of Mathurs have maintained elite status in the various societies.
2. Mathur Theology
Kaysthas and sub-cast Mathurs are the only sect that re referred to as descendants of Vedic God in the religious texts. Worshiping Hinduism they had dual cast status Kaysthas-Brahmins. According to the theology, Lord Brahma wished some group to keep account of affairs of his four Vernas and created Lord Chiteragyptua to lead it. This name was through mind concentration (chitra) and in mystical manner (Gupt). This theology may have influenced some of the earlier liberal Brahmins to move into reading and writing professions as Kaysthas/Mathurs.
3. History
Mathur Population
Mathurs were initially populated in the wide regions of Brij Bhomi in the wast empire of Mathura and said to have ruling authority in many regions obtained as rewards of services or sharing collected taxes with the higher authorities. Today, Mathurs are spread out all over the world. Most of our Indian family members had and/or are now in high positions all over India. Those of us that immigrated to USA and other western countries in spite of initial hurtles, have been able to move up into respectable positions.
